About the Director & Founder

Rose Auvaa is the visionary Director and Founder of Harborlight Music Academy, dedicated to nurturing the next generation of musicians in American Samoa. With a passion for excellence and a commitment to professional mentorship, he leads the academy in its mission to ignite creative mastery through disciplined musical education.

For nearly five decades, Rose Auvaa has dedicated his life to music, education, faith, and the development of young people. His journey is a powerful story of passion, perseverance, lifelong learning, and service to his community.
Rose's love for music began at the age of six. With little more than curiosity and a desire to create music, he began experimenting with home percussion instruments and discovered the joy of rhythm and sound. By the age of eight, he had begun learning the guitar. At fifteen, through determination and self-discipline, he taught himself to play the reed organ.
These early experiences shaped the musician and educator he would become. His passion for music eventually led him to pursue formal music education at the American Samoa Community College, where he earned an Associate of Arts degree. His commitment to learning never stopped. During his years of service with the American Samoa Department of Education, he continued his education and earned both a bachelor's degree in Education and a master's degree in Curriculum Studies.
Education became one of the great callings of his life. Rose Auvaa served for 14 years as an elementary school teacher and later spent 10 years as a high school music teacher. Through the classroom, he discovered the profound impact that a caring teacher, a musical opportunity, and a belief in a student's potential can have on a young person's life.
Beyond the classroom, music ministry has been a lifelong calling. For nearly 50 years, Mr. Auvaa has served various church choirs as a music director. Through generations of singers and musicians, he has used music to strengthen faith, develop talent, bring people together, and inspire excellence. His service has helped shape countless musicians and has made music an important part of the lives of many families and communities.
In 2005, Rose Auvaa took a bold step toward expanding his educational mission by founding the Allegro Piano School. What began as a vision to teach piano grew steadily over the years. In 2018, the school was renamed Harborlight Piano School, reflecting a deeper and broader vision for serving students through music.
In 2026, that vision expanded once again. Recognizing the need for greater opportunities in music education, Mr. Auvaa broadened the program to include piano, voice, violin, guitar, ukulele, trumpet, saxophone, percussion, music theory, and choir. With this expansion, Harborlight Piano School became Harborlight Music Academy.
The name Harborlight represents the vision at the heart of the academy: to be a place of guidance, hope, discovery, and direction. Just as a harbor light guides ships safely through darkness, music can guide, inspire, and illuminate the lives of young people.
Today, Rose Auvaa continues to lead Harborlight Music Academy with a lifelong commitment to excellence and service. His mission is not simply to teach students how to play instruments or sing songs. His greater mission is to help students discover their potential, develop discipline and confidence, experience the joy of creativity, and learn the lifelong values that music can teach.
Through local instruction and expanding online opportunities, Mr. Auvaa is committed to making music education available to more students in American Samoa and beyond. His vision is to build a strong musical community where children, youth, adults, families, churches, and aspiring musicians can learn, grow, perform, and inspire one another.
After a lifetime of teaching, serving, learning, and making music, Rose Auvaa continues to believe that every person has the potential to develop a gift—and that with opportunity, encouragement, discipline, and dedication, that gift can become something extraordinary.
His life's work is now expressed through Harborlight Music Academy:
“Inspiring Excellence Through Music.”
This is more than a slogan. It is the mission of a lifetime.
Through Harborlight Music Academy, Rose Auvaa continues to build a legacy that reaches beyond music lessons. He is helping to develop confident young people, strengthen families and communities, preserve the value of music education, and prepare a new generation to discover the power of their own musical voices.
The journey that began with a six-year-old boy discovering rhythm and sound continues today—through every student who learns, every musician who grows, every choir that sings, and every life that is inspired through music.

With over two decades of experience in music ministry, Rose has chaired numerous vocal ensembles and served as a lead pianist for major community events. His leadership is defined by a unique combination of professional rigor and compassionate mentorship. This dual focus became the cornerstone of Harborlight Music Academy, which he founded to provide a dedicated space for local youth to explore their creative potential in a professional, structured environment.

Under his guidance, Harborlight Music Academy has expanded from a small private studio into a vibrant hub for musical literacy in the Pacific. Rose has personally mentored hundreds of students, many of whom have gone on to lead their own ministries and pursue further education in the arts. His philosophy centers on the belief that music is not just a skill to be learned, but a tool for building confidence, character, and community leadership.

Today, Rose continues to innovate at the academy, introducing new programs in strings, brass, and theory while maintaining the high standards that have made Harborlight a premier institution. He remains actively involved in every level of instruction, ensuring that the legacy of excellence he envisioned is present in every note played and every song sung within the academy walls.

"His mission at Harborlight is to inspire excellence in every note played and every song sung. He is here to serve the families of American Samoa by creating a space where technical mastery meets the joy of discovery, empowering our youth to find their true artistic voice and lead with confidence."
